Wedding Dress Regret: 2,627 Brides on What They Spent
Read the discussions where regret is the subject and the headline is the opposite of what you expect: 1708 of 2,627 brides say they have no regret, and 919 describe regret or mixed feelings. That is 35%. Among those who do regret something, the reason named most is second-guessing after seeing other gowns at 24% of stated reasons, ahead of the amount itself at 14% and wrong style for her, the venue or the season at 11%.
Below: every reason ranked, regret by what she paid, what brides did next, and the advice they give the next bride.
What brides actually regret
Second-guessing after seeing other gowns accounts for 24% of stated reasons, ahead of the amount itself at 14%. Grouped by kind, doubt about the choice accounts for 34% of stated reasons, money for 30%, how the dress looks for 18% and fit or comfort for 10%.
Each reason has a page of its own carrying every account filed under it, and next to them the brides who name the same thing and still say they have no regret.
- Second-guessing after seeing other gowns (217 accounts)
- The amount itself (129 accounts)
- Wrong style for her, the venue or the season (99 accounts)
- Settled for a cheaper dress (89 accounts)
- Pressure from a consultant or family (89 accounts)
- Fit, sizing or body change (60 accounts)
- The alterations bill (41 accounts)
- Fabric or construction quality (39 accounts)
- Something else (156 accounts)
The distinction that matters when you read these: brides who regret the amount almost never say the dress was wrong, and brides who regret the dress rarely mention the price. Those are two different problems with two different fixes. The first is solved before the appointment by naming a number; the second is solved at the fitting by photographing yourself and moving around in the gown.
Regret by what she paid
Among the 905 accounts that include a price, brides who spent under $1,000 express the least regret at 18%, and brides who spent $5,000 and up the most at 40%. The relationship is real but not a straight line: money buys confidence at the bottom of the range and doubt at the top.
| What she paid | Accounts | Regret | Mixed | No regret | Any regret |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Under $1,000 | 544 | 23 | 76 | 445 | 18% |
| $1,000 to $2,499 | 188 | 16 | 46 | 126 | 33% |
| $2,500 to $4,999 | 101 | 7 | 21 | 73 | 28% |
| $5,000 and up | 72 | 10 | 19 | 43 | 40% |
The separate price dataset, where 2,053 brides mentioned a feeling in passing while stating a spend, shows the same shape: 8% under $1,000 against 28% between $2,500 and $3,999. The all-in figure predicts regret better than the dress price alone, because it includes the alterations bill that arrived after the decision was made. Alterations medians are on the alterations page.
Before the wedding and after
491 of the regret accounts come from brides who have not worn the dress yet and 286 from brides looking back, and the two groups name different reasons. Before the wedding the leading reason is second-guessing after seeing other gowns at 35%. Afterwards it drops out of the top three entirely and the amount itself leads at 15%.
| Stated most often | Before the wedding | After the wedding |
|---|---|---|
| Second-guessing after seeing other gowns | 35% | |
| Wrong style for her, the venue or the season | 14% | |
| The amount itself | 12% | |
| The amount itself | 15% | |
| Settled for a cheaper dress | 14% | |
| Something else | 13% |
The shift is the useful finding. Doubt before the wedding is mostly comparison: she has seen a hundred other gowns since she paid, and none of them is hers. That fades. What survives the day is the money and the compromise: the amount itself and settled for a cheaper dress are the two biggest reasons among brides writing after the wedding. A recurring line from that group: nobody at the wedding knew what the dress cost, and nobody noticed the detail she had fixated on for months.
What happened, case by case
Only the accounts where a bride describes regret or mixed feelings, spread across reasons and price bands so the table is not just the biggest bills.
| Paid | What she regrets | What she did | The account |
|---|---|---|---|
| $50,000 | The amount itself | unstated | Calls the $50,000 wedding money wasted even though the day itself was beautiful. This is the whole wedding, not the dress. |
| $20,000 | Fabric or construction quality | still deciding | A 20k gown plus a 3k veil arrived in the wrong color with stains, holes and raw edges two months before the wedding; the store stalled and then stopped replying. |
| $18,000 | The amount itself | unstated | An $18,000 Paris gown for a first marriage that ended after ten years; her second and lasting marriage happened at a courthouse in blue jeans. |
| $10,000 | Wrong style for her, the venue or the season | still deciding | Spent close to 10000 on an Anne Barge column gown during a rushed engagement; months out she realises she always pictured an A-line or ballgown, and is weighing an overskirt or a rush replacement. |
| $9,000 | Fabric or construction quality | still deciding | Asked only for natural fibres and had silk taffeta confirmed by email; the gown arrived tagged 100 percent polyester and the shop said it was never advertised as silk. Still finds it beautiful but feels she overpaid |
| A$4,000 | The alterations bill | still deciding | Rush-ordered a Maggie Sottero, got a size 18, paid $1000 to take it in, then unrequested boning changed the shape. Wedding in 19 days, backups ordered, says she regrets entering a bridal store at all. |
| £4,000 | Pressure from a consultant or family | kept | One 2-hour appointment in June, felt rushed and pushed into the dress even though she loved it then; parents paid nearly 4k and she now says it is not the style she had pictured. |
| $4,000 | Pressure from a consultant or family | still deciding | Said yes to the Jenny Yoo Celine after four boutiques in two days because her mother loved it; on pickup it felt elegant but not like her, and she wants the Anthropologie gown instead |
| $3,500 | Fit, sizing or body change | still deciding | Made-to-order gown with an added slit arrived and does not drape like the sample; she says she feels like she is in a prom dress and has gone back to her October runner-up, which would cost about 4,000 with rush fees. The shop is asking the designer what can be done. After the answers she says the feedback helped and she will retry it and film herself walking. |
| $1,800 | Cannot resell, return or recover the money | still deciding | An $1800 dress worn 40 minutes for pre-wedding photos, never altered, tags on. Listed at $500 and unsold despite a popular style in a standard size; may become a summer dress. |
| £1,799 | Second-guessing after seeing other gowns | unstated | Bought a Madi Lane Kyann in size 16, changed her mind, never wore it, and is now offering it at about 500. |
| $1,500 | Settled for a cheaper dress | unstated | Walked away from a $1,500 gown she calls her dream dress and still thinks about it |
| $1,400 | Second-guessing after seeing other gowns | rebought | Gown one was gorgeous and fitted, but she knew she would dislike it in every photo; four months out she is on dress two and counts about 2400 lost, with no regret about switching. |
| $1,300 | The alterations bill | altered | A 600 sample-sale gown has run close to 1300 in alterations for a bustle, sides and three hem layers, plus 180 to let it out after weight gain; she loves the dress but would undo the spend. |
| $800 | Settled for a cheaper dress | rebought | Budgeted $1,000, bought an $800 sale gown she was not fully happy in, then paid $2,200 for one she loves |
| $700 | Cannot resell, return or recover the money | unstated | Commissioned a custom corset and dress from a viral social-media maker, paid a 700 deposit, got a cotton mock-up after months and nothing else. Cancelling was refused and she was told to pay for the whole dress instead. Wedding is in September. |
| $600 | Wrong style for her, the venue or the season | altered | Swore she would never wear strapless, then bought a discounted silk strapless gown in a rush; a week out she fears it will slip and that it is too bare for a church ceremony, and her mother is unsupportive |
| $600 | Fit, sizing or body change | returned | Spent $600 on an online gown as the first she ever tried; it came too big, looked worse than in the listing, and she paid to ship it back. |
What brides did next
| What she did | Brides |
|---|---|
| Kept it and wore it | 483 |
| Still deciding | 188 |
| Bought a second dress | 79 |
| Not stated | 67 |
| Had it altered or remade | 63 |
| Sold it | 20 |
| Returned it | 12 |
| Donated it | 7 |
Altering beats rebuying in these accounts. Sleeves added or removed, a neckline raised, a train cut, a bodice re-boned: each costs a fraction of a second gown and targets the exact complaint. The brides who bought a second dress usually did so for a different reason than regret about the first, most often a change of venue, season or size.
The advice brides give
- Check the return terms before buying a gown on eBay; a cheap dress you cannot send back is not a saving.
- Have the consultant write down every dress name you try on, then hunt those exact names secondhand.
- Size down when buying high street bridal in a sale.
- Email a few bridal shops to ask what ex-display stock is sitting in their cupboards.
- Chase the dream gown through sample sales and resale first, but accept when the alterations bill makes the bargain pointless.
- Get a real tailoring quote before deciding anything, and judge the colour with the full look rather than on a hanger at home.
- Line up your tailor before you even have the dress; she had one booked before her first purchase failed.
- An hour-long charity appointment is very quick, so go in knowing what you want.
- Do not price your alterations from what you read online; her real bill was half what she had braced for.
- Doubt straight after buying does not predict how you will feel on the day.
- Treat post-purchase doubt as routine rather than proof you chose wrong.
- Picking one gown out of thousands makes second-guessing close to inevitable.
Common questions about dress regret
Is wedding dress regret normal?
Less normal than the discussions suggest. Even where regret is the subject being asked about, 1708 of 2,627 brides say they have none and 919 describe regret or mixed feelings, which is 35%. In the separate price dataset, where brides were answering a question about money rather than feelings, 297 of 2,053 expressed any regret. The pattern that repeats is not the gown but the gap between what she planned to spend and what she spent.
What do brides regret most about their wedding dress?
Second-guessing after seeing other gowns at 24% of stated reasons, then the amount itself at 14% and wrong style for her, the venue or the season at 11%. Grouped by kind, doubt about the choice accounts for 34% of stated reasons and money for 30%. The doubt is loudest before the wedding; the money is what brides still name when they write afterwards.
Should I buy a second wedding dress if I regret the first?
79 brides here did, 63 had the first one altered or remade instead, and 483 kept it as it was. The brides who altered were happiest with the outcome: a neckline change, sleeves removed or a train shortened costs a fraction of a second gown and fixes the specific thing that bothers them.
Can I return or resell a wedding dress I regret?
Most bridal salons sell final sale, which is why sunk cost shows up as its own reason here. Resale recovers a fraction: brides reported a $7,000 designer gown selling for $2,800 and a $2,500 dress for $1,150, while altered gowns are hardest to move. Consignment shops, StillWhite and Facebook groups were the routes that actually produced sales.
How do I avoid dress regret?
The advice brides repeat: name a ceiling out loud before the first appointment, get the alterations quote before you sign for the gown, photograph yourself in every dress on a phone rather than trusting the mirror, sit and walk in it, and wait a week before buying the one you cannot stop thinking about.
Is it normal to regret your wedding dress right after buying it?
Several brides report the same thing unprompted: one felt it within a couple of days of ordering and went back to the boutique, one still regrets her choice five years later, and regulars say regret posts appear multiple times a day in this sub. It is very common here: several said they panicked after ordering and then fell back in love with the gown, while two rebought, including one who replaced a $2,700 dress with a $400 one.
Should I try on wedding dresses above my budget?
Repeatedly called the cardinal rule of dress shopping: do not. The brides only put this one on to look at the back and ended up in tears in the mirror, which some brides read as the shop steering her toward a bigger sale. No. Brides repeatedly warn that stylists pull above-budget gowns and you fall for them; state a hard limit up front. One bride who gave a 1,200 budget was shown only gowns under it and paid 950.
does wedding dress regret go away
For the brides answering here it did. One had major regret a week out and now loves her photos; another wound up with something quite different from her vision and reports zero regret. the bride who asked later confirmed she was happy at pickup. For this bride it did completely. She wrote in a panic months before the wedding, wore the same dress, and came back afterwards saying she felt like a princess in it and was glad she had been talked off the ledge.
can you negotiate the price of a wedding dress at a bridal shop
brides say to ask the shop to meet you halfway or to sell it at your stated budget, and to ring other shops that carry the same gown to compare. The worst outcome is a no. Some brides did: one always asks for 10% off by citing another shop, one haggled a consignment gown to 500, and a shop honored a written misquote so a 10,000-plus gown sold for 6,000; a discontinued floor sample went for 50% off.
should I buy a second wedding dress if I regret the first
Everyone here who did says it was worth it, and the one bride who stuck with her regret dress still feels bummed looking at her photos. The caveat brides add is to pay for it outside the wedding fund rather than eating into other vendors. This bride did: she bought a $300 replacement, compared the two side by side and went with the new one for her barn wedding.
Do brides regret spending a lot on a wedding dress?
The 6,000 bride is torn (worth it on the day, second thoughts when the credit card bills came), the 4,500 bride thinks she could have found cheaper, while those at 1,200-2,500 and the 20-600 bargain hunters report no regret at all. One bride who paid 2,500 before extensive alterations loves the gown but calls the price excessive in hindsight; a relative who paid 1,500 for a niece's gown and a 2005 bride at 650 said it was worth it.
how much do you save at a bridal sample sale
the bride who asked paid 600 for the gown she chose, which was a third of the budget she had set for a dress. Samples went for 2,500 (10k silk gown), 750 (6,400 Romona Keveza), 3,300 (Leanne Marshall runway piece), 4,000 (8,500 retail), 3,671 (Liz Martinez at 60-70 percent off), 1,152, 1,850 (Pronovias) and 200 and 45 at NYC's Bride on a Buck; the trade-off is repairs, cleaning or resizing, which cost 400-1,700 in those cases.
Will I regret buying a cheap wedding dress?
Some do: one bride dislikes most of her photos after choosing an inexpensive gown, another regrets a plain off-the-rack dress, and a dupe bought for roughly 300 instead of 1,600 looks cheap in the fabric and corset; others were fully happy with 350-500 dresses. Both regrets exist here. One bride's friend chose the cheaper dress over her dream dress, which was itself only just over $100, and still regretted it ten years later. Others put the saved money into food, drinks and photos and call it the better trade.
