How Much Do Wedding Dress Alterations Cost? 1,989 Real Bills
Brides who paid for alterations spent a median of $500, with the middle half of 1,989 US bills running $300 to $800 and one in ten passing $1,000. At the median the tailoring bill was 43% of the dress price, and in 244 reports it cost as much as the gown or more. 206 brides paid nothing, almost all because the dress was made to measure or bought as a bridesmaid style.
Below: what each job costs, why New York bills run double the Mountain West, the salon-versus-independent-tailor gap, and the brides who paid $3,000 to fix a $30 dress.
What each alteration costs
A hem on a single-layer skirt ran $40 to $150 in these reports, a bustle $50 to $400 depending on points and train, bra cups $35 to $60, and a bodice take-in $100 to $300. Beaded lace is the multiplier: removing and re-attaching appliques by hand turned a $300 job into $750.
| Dress | Alterations | Year | What the bride reported |
|---|---|---|---|
| $1,700 | $370 | 2023 | Raleigh, NC: add cups $35, five-layer hem $235, bustle $100 |
| – | $240 | 2019 | Boston area: seven-point bustle, two-layer horsehair hem, boned corset bodice taken in a full size |
| – | $325 | 2023 | Newark, CA: three-layer hem, bust and waist taken in, tulle applique repaired, zipper moved, three-point bustle |
| – | $340 | 2019 | Chicago suburbs, itemized quote: two layers cut at $30 each, one hemmed at $40, $40 per sleeve, $100 bodice and back |
| – | $720 | 2024 | Simple satin ballgown: hem, bustle, waist and bust darts, plus $180 for hand pressing |
| – | $950 | 2021 | Sample gown: boning extended, top in three inches, 13-point bustle, five tulle layers cut at the knee break |
| – | $800 | 2022 | New York City salon seamstress: silk gown taken in, back waist raised, one-point bustle, single-layer sweep hem |
| $2,500 | $1,200 | 2026 | Ohio: $600 of it a seven-layer hem, the rest taking a size 20 down to a bridal 12 |
| – | $1,400 | 2026 | Houston: heavy shortening and a zipper converted to a corset on a sample-sale Rue de Seine lace gown |
| $2,000 | $2,000 | 2025 | Ordered a larger size on purpose for the proportions, then a ballroom bustle; tailoring equaled the dress |
| $30 | $3,000 | 2023 | A $30 antique-mall find rebuilt into her dream dress |
| – | $2,100 | 2024 | Alameda, CA quote: bodice and bust take-in, long-sleeve adjustment, hem, bustle and collar on beaded lace |
The pattern across 1,989 bills is layers and embellishment, not dress price. A plain satin or crepe gown with a sweep train stays under $400 almost everywhere. Tulle ballgowns with five to seven layers, boned corsets, illusion backs and lace borders start at $800 and reach $1,200 to $2,100 when the bodice has to be re-beaded after a take-in. Weight change between purchase and wedding is the other driver: one bride paid $550 to bring a $550 dress in after losing 28 pounds, and a second fitting after weight gain added $180 to a $1,300 bill.
Alterations cost by city and region
New York City brides report a median alterations bill of $775 across 112 reports, against $327 in the Southeast. Salons in Manhattan quote flat fees of $995 to $1,800 that cover whatever the gown needs; most other cities price job by job.
| Region | Bills | Median | Middle half | Highest |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| New York City | 112 | $775 | $500 to $1,000 | $2,500 |
| Toronto / GTA | 24 | $500 | $300 to $700 | $2,000 |
| Australia | 21 | $585 | $250 to $1,000 | $1,300 |
| Midwest | 31 | $500 | $160 to $740 | $1,300 |
| Los Angeles / SoCal | 18 | $600 | $400 to $900 | $1,600 |
| Washington DC area | 18 | $645 | $400 to $900 | $1,200 |
| Mountain West | 11 | $385 | $200 to $746 | $1,300 |
| Southeast | 15 | $327 | $100 to $760 | $1,035 |
| Seattle / Portland | 14 | $688 | $300 to $800 | $1,000 |
| Texas | 9 | $700 | $500 to $950 | $1,400 |
| Chicago | 12 | $695 | $500 to $962 | $1,100 |
| Boston / New England | 13 | $460 | $400 to $790 | $3,000 |
| Florida | 13 | $470 | $270 to $600 | $850 |
| San Francisco Bay Area | 13 | $650 | $400 to $800 | $1,000 |
The New York numbers include Kleinfeld's in-house flat rate ($995 to $1,000 in 2022 to 2024 reports), Sew Elegant's $1,200 flat quote, and an Alteration Specialists bill of over $1,200 that carried a $700 wedding-dress surcharge. Brides in Brooklyn, New Jersey and Long Island reported the same work for $400 to $800, and several New York brides drove the dress to a suburban tailor. The Bay Area shows the same pattern: $325 at an independent shop in Newark, $2,100 quoted at a boutique in Alameda for beaded lace. Regions with fewer than six bills are left off the table; see prices by city for dress prices in the same metros.
Bridal salon seamstress vs independent tailor
The same job was quoted $700 at a bridal shop and done for $350 by an independent tailor, $250 against $85, and a $700 shop minimum against a $560 independent bill. Across the reports that compared both, the independent quote came in 30% to 65% lower.
| Dress | Alterations | Year | What the bride reported |
|---|---|---|---|
| – | $350 | 2023 | Size 10 sample to a 6: bridal shop quoted $700, independent tailor charged $350 |
| – | $85 | 2023 | Shoulder take-in quoted $250 because of delicate lace; a non-bridal tailor did it for $85 |
| $1,900 | $560 | 2024 | One shop quoted a $700 minimum and warned $900 to $1,200 if the corset was rebuilt; a seamstress did it for $560 |
| $350 | $600 | 2024 | Local tailor, mostly shortening, on a $350 sample dress |
| $2,000 | $995 | 2024 | Kleinfeld in-house: bustle and tightening on a $2,000 lace-and-bead gown, half the dress price |
| – | $1,000 | 2022 | Kleinfeld flat rate in 2022, several appointments |
| – | $1,200 | 2025 | Sew Elegant, New York: flat quote for a small bust take-in plus bustle |
| – | $1,200 | 2021 | Alteration Specialists, SoHo: includes a $700 wedding-dress surcharge; a New Jersey tailor would have charged far less |
Shop seamstresses earn their premium on complicated gowns: they know how the designer built the bodice, the fittings happen where you bought the dress, and the shop stands behind the result. On a plain gown that needs a hem, a bustle and a side take-in, the reports favor an independent tailor with bridal experience, booked after a look at their finished work. Two warnings recurred: a tailor who charges by the hour should put the estimate in writing before the first pin, and a salon that requires its own alterations should say so before you sign for the dress.
Size, weight change and plus-size costs
691 accounts describe what sizing did to the bill, with a median of $438 where an amount was stated. The three drivers brides name: a sample or floor model two or three sizes off, weight change between purchase and wedding, and a bust that needs the bodice rebuilt rather than taken in.

|---|---|---|
| Tall | $8,000 | Long torso meant bridal gowns with a defined waist never sat right. After trying most shops in NYC and NJ she doubled a $4,000 budget: made to measure |
| Other | $3,000 | Loved the Sottero and Midgley Mirabella but the salon sample ran too large on her, and the quote of about 3000 already included the alterations. |
| Other | $2,500 | She happened to fit the salon's floor sample, which is what let her buy that gown at $2,500 rather than about $3,200 new. |
| Petite or short | $2,100 | 5'1 bride who bought off the rack at a Guelph consignment shop for $2,100 after tax and walked out with it the same day. |
| Bust and cup size | $1,730 | A 34GG bride wore the Stella York 7941 and felt supported in it without extra bust engineering. |
| Other | $1,600 | Bought a size 12 off the rack as a size 4 to save money. Nobody at the shop flagged the gap; the alteration quote came back at 1600, a second seamstre |
| Plus size | $1,600 | Plus-size bride paid $1,600 at the chain for gown, veil, blusher and accessories out of a large plus-size selection. |
| Petite or short | $1,600 | Bought a $1,600 sample-size gown at Elisabeth & Beau knowing it runs large, and is taking it to a seamstress to bring it down. |
| Bust and cup size | $1,600 | At 157 cm with an E cup she tried two made-to-measure European gowns at 1,600 and 1,800 and concluded heavy lace did not work on her frame. |

| Other | $1,250 | Taking a sample size 12 down to a 4, plus bustle, hem and resewing missing buttons, was quoted at $1,000-1,500 on a $1,750 dress. |

| Other | $1,100 | A consultant told her bridal sizing runs large, so she left with a size 12 while wearing a 6 to 8; taking the gown back down to her measurements cost |
Two practical notes that recur. Buying a size up "to be safe" costs more than it saves when the whole bodice has to come in, and salons that stock samples above a US 16 are rare enough that plus-size brides reported travelling to reach one or ordering made to measure instead. Weight loss after purchase was the single most expensive surprise: a corset back leaves room to take in, a zipper does not.
Alterations cost by year
The median alterations bill rose from $225 among brides who bought in 2016 to $600 in 2026, a faster climb than dress prices over the same span.
| Year | Bills | Median alterations | Median dress that year |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2016 | 24 | $225 | $550 |
| 2017 | 63 | $330 | $850 |
| 2018 | 76 | $422 | $930 |
| 2019 | 40 | $412 | $772 |
| 2020 | 32 | $450 | $610 |
| 2021 | 60 | $490 | $498 |
| 2022 | 401 | $500 | $900 |
| 2023 | 232 | $500 | $1,067 |
| 2024 | 257 | $550 | $700 |
| 2025 | 348 | $600 | $800 |
| 2026 | 415 | $600 | $1,000 |
Two things changed. Tailors raised hourly rates through 2022 to 2024, and gowns got heavier: illusion bodices, detachable sleeves and multi-layer tulle all add fitting hours. Brides buying made to measure online (Azazie, Etsy sellers, Olivia Bottega) sidestepped the bill entirely in most reports, which is the main reason the all-channel median dress price stays low while the salon route keeps climbing.
When alterations cost more than the dress
In 244 of 1235 reports where both amounts were stated, alterations matched or exceeded the dress. The typical case is a cheap or secondhand gown two sizes off, a bride whose measurements changed, or a shop's seamstress with a minimum.
A $30 antique-mall gown rebuilt for $3,000. A $500 secondhand dress with $1,500 of tailoring because the photos mattered. A $350 sample with $600 of shortening. A $300 dress turned into a custom design for $1,500. Most of these brides said the money was well spent, but the ones who regretted it shared one detail: they had not asked for a second alteration quote. Regret by total spend is on the main page.
Bride bills vs Zola's guide
Zola's alterations guide puts basic hem-and-bustle work at $300 to $600 and structural changes at $700 to $1,200 or more; the bride-reported median of $500 sits at the top of Zola's basic range, and the 75th percentile ($800) sits inside the structural range.
| Source | Basic (hem, bustle, small take-in) | Complex (bodice rebuild, beading, layers) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zola alterations guide | $300 to $600 | $700 to $1,200+ | Simple bustle $75 to $200; rush under 8 weeks adds 25% to 50% |
| Bride-reported bills here | $300 to $500 (25th to 50th percentile) | $800 to $1,000 (75th to 90th) | New York flat fees $995 to $1,800; David's Bridal in-house $250 to $600 |
Every alterations bill brides described
2,522 brides reported what the tailoring cost and said what was done for it. Every one of them is published, with the dress price beside it wherever the same bride gave both.
They are in the alterations archive, four hundred to a page, cheapest first. Bills of zero are included: those are brides whose gown needed no work at all.
What brides asked about alterations
Is $600 normal for wedding dress alterations?
Yes. $600 sits just above the $500 median of 1,989 bride-reported bills and inside the middle half ($300 to $800). A hem, bustle and side take-in on a plain gown usually lands at $300 to $600; beading, lace appliques, boned corsets and multi-layer tulle push it to $800 and beyond.
Why do alterations cost more than the dress?
Because tailoring is priced by hours, not by the dress. In 244 of 1235 reports where both amounts were stated the alterations matched or exceeded the gown: a $30 antique-mall dress rebuilt for $3,000, a $500 sale dress with $1,000 of work, a $350 sample that needed $600 of shortening. Cheap dresses do not come with cheap seams.
How much is a bustle?
A simple one-point or French bustle ran $50 to $150 in these reports; multi-point bustles on long trains ran $150 to $400, and a 13-point bustle on a tulle ballgown was part of a $950 bill. Zola's guide quotes $75 to $200 for a simple bustle and $300 to $400 for elaborate ones.
How much does it cost to hem a wedding dress?
Single-layer hems ran $40 to $150; each extra layer added $30 to $60, so a five-layer tulle skirt came to $235 in one Raleigh quote and a seven-layer hem was $600 of a $1,200 Ohio bill. Lace borders that must be removed and re-attached cost more than a plain cut.
Should I use the bridal shop's seamstress or an independent tailor?
Get both quotes. In these reports the same job was quoted $700 at the shop and $350 outside, $250 versus $85, and a $700 shop minimum against a $560 independent bill. Shop seamstresses know the designer's construction and offer one-stop fittings; independents charge for the work, not the wedding. In New York City several salons charge flat fees of $995 to $1,800 regardless of what needs doing.
When should alterations start, and what does a rush cost?
Brides here booked the first fitting eight to twelve weeks out and had two or three fittings. Zola's guide warns that starting under eight weeks before the wedding adds a 25% to 50% rush fee; one bride quoted $125 an hour at rush rate paid $1,250 for nine hours before a second invoice arrived.
How much do wedding dress alterations cost?
Brides here paid 120-500 for hems, straps, cups and bustles when they used ordinary tailors, while bridal-specialist shops quoted 800-1000 and one range ran to 3000; a bridal shop employee says to budget 400-800. One bride was quoted 500 to 1000 dollars depending on layers and applique, and another's alterations on a cheap Lulus dress cost more than the dress itself. A simple slip dress needing straps or a hem may not need a bridal seamstress at all.
How much should I budget for wedding dress alterations?
Several hundred is the baseline, and in higher-cost areas 300 to 500 buys one job such as a hem alone. Real figures here: 100 on a 70 Lulus dress, 200 for tailoring plus repairs on a Macys clearance gown, 300 on a 500 dress, 300 CAD in Vancouver, 460 for a hem plus cups and bustle, and 525 to take in and hem a sample one size too big. Reported alteration bills ran 50-1,500 with most between 300 and 700; shops warned one bride to expect 600-800, and beaded, multi-layer or heavily bustled gowns hit 900-1,100. Several brides paid more to alter the dress than for the dress itself, so one rule of thumb here is that a 2,100 budget really buys a 1,500 dress.
How much does it cost to hem a wedding dress?
One itemized quote was 350 minimum plus 150 per layer, so 650 for a three-layer skirt; others paid 150 for a hem plus bustle on three layers and 120 for a hem plus added sleeves. One bride says shortening alone usually runs 450 and up, so the asking bride's hem line item could have been higher.
How much does a bustle cost?
One receipt priced the bustle at 40 per point, so a 6-point bustle was 240; bustle plus side seams together made up 400 of an 800 bill. Roughly 75 to 300 and up from one seamstress's price list, rising with the width of the train because a wider train needs more bustle points.
How much should I budget for alterations on top of the dress?
Reported alterations were 300 for minor work, 500 at a family-friend discount, 695 to raise a neckline and add lace, and 700 on a 4,400 gown; one bride budgeted 1k and a store warned alterations easily add 400-500, so brides say it is the cost that surprises most. The discussion does not give a figure but flags it as the cost brides forget, with one bride putting it at close to universal: about 99% of gowns need altering, so set the ceiling for the dress below what you can actually spend.
how much do alterations cost on a cheap wedding dress
Small jobs quoted or paid here were $60 for a sample-sale gown, $100 to adjust a David's Bridal dress, $100 to take in a Poshmark gown, and an estimate of $100-200 to hem and take in the shoulders for a petite bride in a high-cost city. Made-to-measure and custom-size orders often skipped alterations entirely. Alterations regularly cost as much as the gown at this price level: $550 on a $500 dress, $530 on a $1,100 David's Bridal gown after two size drops, $800 on a $1,200 secondhand gown, $500 on a $1,100 ballgown. Buying something that already fits, or ordering to measurements, was the way people avoided it.
Why are wedding dress alterations so expensive?
Each skirt layer is hemmed separately, beading or lace has to come off and go back on, and strap or bodice changes mean opening several seams. brides also blame a bridal markup: a bridesmaid dress with the same work cost 100, and shops that only do bridal quote highest. The hem is the main driver: layered or lace skirts take hours, and shops price the hem by the number of layers and the width rather than how much comes off. Anything structural on top, such as reshaping a neckline or removing beadwork, pushes the bill toward $300.
How many sizes can a wedding dress be taken in?
About two sizes, roughly forty pounds, according to the David's Bridal consultant here. Another bride said hers came in two sizes too big and the shop refunded part of the price and covered the extra alterations without being asked. Two is the accepted limit. Beyond that the tailor is remaking the dress, the proportions and structure change, and the result often does not match what you pictured. brides said the shop should never have sold a gown needing that much work.
Do brides regret spending a lot on their wedding dress?
Most who spent 4,000-8,300 said no regrets; the clearest regret was a 2,200 dress a mother pushed, later resold for 100. Mixed feelings came from alteration surprises, a botched alteration that doubled a 1,200 dress, and from brides who wish they had spent more on the dress that got away. One bride who paid 1200 wishes she had gone cheaper, while brides at 3500-7500 said no regrets; a 900 dress with 275 alterations was called worth every penny.
How much do wedding dress alterations cost in NYC?
Reported NYC bills ranged from $450 to $1,500: $450-$500 at small neighborhood shops, $670-$800 mid-range, $900 for a hem on a layered skirt, and $1,200-$1,500 for flat-fee salon or specialist packages. brides call 800 to 1,800 typical: Kleinfeld charges a 995 flat fee, other brides paid 1,080 to 1,300 for lace or beaded gowns, while independent tailors in Queens did hem, straps and bustle for 300 to 460 and a simple take-in cost 175.
What does David's Bridal charge for alterations?
The front desk told one bride to expect 500-1,000; another salon's contract quoted an average in-house tailoring price of 800-1,500, so shopping around is advised. One bride paid $160 there for taking in the waist and adding a bustle and was pleased; a hem is charged as a flat fee by dress type and layers, and a re-hem is billed in full again. The chain is cheap on some jobs and expensive on others, and a prom dress there went from $200 to $500 once alterations were added.
can you wear a white bridesmaid dress as a wedding dress
It is the most repeated tip here - Azazie white bridesmaid dresses with free custom measurements came in under 100 and needed no alterations at all. Yes. One bride found a bridesmaid style close to the bridal gown she wanted, ordered it in white and paid about $800 including alterations, roughly $600 less than the bridal version.
is Azazie good for wedding dresses
Widely recommended here. Gowns ran $150-450, the at-home try-on programme costs about $15-20 a dress, and their formal (non-bridal) line was used as a wedding dress too. Two cautions: custom sizing does not always remove the need for alterations, and one bride simply kept a try-on dress for under $300. Mixed, but clearly a step above the ultra-cheap sites. One bride ordered several Azazie sample dresses and says they were not bad; the try-at-home sample programme is the recommended way to check quality before committing.
Can you rent a wedding dress and how much does it cost?
Yes. Rentals cost 495-600 here; a custom rental with added sleeves was 580 including cleaning and alterations, and a second reception dress rented from the same shop cost 75 (normally 190). Renters liked returning the dress without cleaning or storing it. One couple paid about 600 USD to rent, choosing a nicer gown than the cheapest options; the bride who asked wanted to rent but had no rental shops nearby.
