What the Rest of the Outfit Costs

The number that matters is the all-in one

Three lines make up the outfit and only one of them is the dress. The median gown is $850, the median tailoring bill when a bride paid one is $500, and the median veil and accessories line is $166. The all-in median across 2,086 reports is $1,600.

The gap between the gown and the total is the part that surprises brides, and it is not evenly spread. A made-to-measure dress cut to your own numbers can arrive needing no alterations at all, which removes the middle line completely. A sample two sizes out adds the most to it. What goes underneath

The bodice decides this. A structured gown with boning and cups sewn in needs nothing under it, and that construction is part of what the price buys. A soft or unlined dress needs its own support, and a full skirt needs something holding it out.

• At the 200 dollar level the dress is cheap enough to experiment on: she took a seam ripper to the tulle underskirt herself rather than paying a seamstress.
• A pink dip-dyed petticoat under a white ball gown is the cheap way to get a colour effect, done by one bride at her own wedding.
• Alts NYC drew complaints: a large-chested bride got a cotton cord instead of a bra band and was told to buy her own corset, and another bride says Alts damaged a shower dress and charged nearly the dress price; the West Village location got better reviews than Williamsburg.
• Lace-trim hems are done by removing the lace by hand, hemming the satin, lining and crinoline, then reattaching the lace, or by taking the dress up at the waist instead.
• A heavy petticoat plus a many-layered skirt is very hot; the bride who asked says it works for her April wedding but would be unwearable in July or August.
• A bride who owns multiple fajas and shapewear pieces said basic shapewear would not have changed the silhouette under this style of gown, and that only a custom compression garment would, which would have been miserable to wear all day if she was not used to it.
• Shapewear can backfire in photos: one bride wore it under a velvet gown to a formal wedding and felt it made her look bound rather than smooth, and would skip it if she could redo it.

Two practical points repeat. Smooth fabric shows everything, so shapewear lines print through satin and the fix is a different garment rather than a different size. And a petticoat is frequently the cheaper answer to a skirt that hangs wrong, standing in for an alteration rather than following one.

Shoes

Money is not the constraint here. Comfort is, because this is the only part of the outfit worn standing for twelve hours.

• Wooden clogs as bridal shoes rated 7 out of 10 for comfort from the bride who wore them: fine for most of the day, painful by hour eight.
• A full-outfit breakdown from a European bride: gown 700 EUR, alterations 180 EUR in house, veil 160 EUR, shoes 150 EUR, jewellery and underwear about 100 EUR. Her point is that the gown is roughly half the real cost of getting dressed.
• Two brides make the same practical point about where the money should go: comfort first, and spend on the veil, shoes and jewellery because those can be worn again. One had a veil remade into a christening headband for a friend's daughters.
• The standard planning split quoted here is 5 to 10 percent of the total budget for all couple attire: gown, shoes, veil, jewellery, shapewear, alterations and the partner's outfit combined.
• Prepaid boutique preservation packages can cover up to five extra items (veil, shoes, undergarments) for the same $325, which brides call good value.
• A one-layer A-line is at the cheap end of cleaning ($150); fuller skirts with more layers cost more, and shoes can be preserved in the same order.

The point that actually saves money has nothing to do with the shoes themselves. Take the exact pair to the hem fitting. A hem set against a different heel height is a second alteration, and a hem is the most common alteration there is.

Jewellery, hair and what brides borrowed

This is where the accessories line goes to nothing or goes to hundreds, and the deciding factor is usually whether somebody in the family already owns a veil.

• David's Bridal as-is off-the-rack dresses run 50% off if your size is there, and the chain sells shoes, belts, tiaras and veils cheaply; Anthropologie Weddings (formerly BHLDN) dresses are returnable, ship faster than salon orders, and go on deep sale (a Wtoo by Watters gown was linked during a sale weekend).
• The consistent cheap-alternative advice to altering a gown is accessories: a pearl choker or multi-strand necklace, drop earrings, a small tiara rather than a crown, and hair with pearls woven in. Several brides push real pearls, including borrowed family pieces, over sewn-on fake ones.
• One bride funded her own stretch by selling scrap gold: a part-full pill bottle of broken chains and old earrings brought $3,000, and she advises shopping several buyers for the best rate.
• Accessories carry more of the bridal signal than the gown for non-traditional brides: veils, headpieces, flower crowns, tiaras, brooches, added beading and hair jewels were repeatedly suggested as the way to turn a costume-ish dress bridal without changing the dress.
• Veil, headpiece and belt plus alterations added about $650 to a $700 dress; a cape veil was folded into a roughly $3,000 total.
• Borrowing the veil and hairpiece from family cut this bride's accessories cost to nothing on top of a $1,200 gown.

The argument brides make for spending here rather than on the gown is re-wearability. Shoes and jewellery outlive the day; the dress usually goes into a box. What that costs to do is on the preservation page, and the veil has a page of its own.

Outfit breakdowns, line by line

The accounts that itemise rather than giving one number are the most useful thing here, because they show where the money actually went.

• Full 2015 California boutique breakdown: 1600 Maggie Sottero dress, 300 alterations, 500 custom lace jacket, 350 in two veils, 100 shoes, 80 Spanx, total 2930.
• David's Bridal reference point: 650 dress plus 472 alterations. A groom's full outfit (suit, shirt, bow tie) cost 450.
• Full cost breakdown from this bride at a Texas bridal salon in 2025: gown 2,200 USD, veil 900 USD, about 3,400 USD with tax for both, and a separate alterations quote of nearly 900 USD. Her mother paid for the veil.
• Post-wedding cleaning was quoted at 300-500, on top of 500 in alterations, for a dress worn 2-3 hours and left filthy. That is the full cost picture one bride uses to explain her regret.
• Atlanta 2016 breakdown: hem on a big layered skirt about 250, 8-point two-layer bustle about 150, bust and waist darts made up the rest of an 800 bill.
• Cost breakdown as a sanity check for DIY brides: about $194 total spent, of which only $68 is the finished gown. Sunk costs on trial fabric were roughly as large as the dress itself.
