Routes by budget
The channel medians from 4,609 price reports set the expectation before you pick a shop.
| Route | Reports | Median | Middle half | What it buys |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Non-bridal retail (Lulus, ASOS, department stores) | 777 | $280 | $138 to $500 | Lulus, ASOS, department stores, bridesmaid styles in white; simple silhouettes, no train |
| Secondhand (StillWhite, Poshmark, thrift) | 409 | $300 | $120 to $600 | StillWhite, Poshmark, eBay, Facebook, thrift and charity shops; designer gowns at a fraction, sold as-is |
| Made to measure online (Etsy, Azazie, custom) | 324 | $600 | $365 to $1,600 | Azazie, Cocomelody, Olivia Bottega, Etsy makers; cut to your measurements, often no alterations |
| Off the rack, sample sale, outlet | 645 | $700 | $400 to $1,000 | Sample sales, floor models, outlets, consignment; 40% to 80% off, sample sizing |
| Bridal salon (made to order) | 781 | $1,900 | $1,200 to $3,000 | Made to order from a designer, fittings included, four to nine months lead time |
Two costs sit outside the sticker price. Made-to-measure and bridesmaid-style gowns often need no alterations at all, which removes a median $500 from the total. Salon and sample gowns almost always need work, and sample sizing adds the most because the dress has to come down two or three sizes. Full figures are on the alterations page.
What brides warn about
24 shops or routes drew repeated warnings rather than recommendations.
- David's Bridal: Priced a near replica of her online gown at 980 before alterations, which is why she went online instead.
- Etsy sellers: Bought a knock-off on Etsy for her own wedding and tells the bride who asked emphatically not to repeat it
- StillWhite: Bought a gown there and it did not work out, so she had to start again with a different dress.
- Azazie: Great for bridesmaid dresses but the quality lacks; she would not buy a wedding gown there.
- Lulus: Shopped the cheaper online sites and came away unimpressed with what they offered.
- BHLDN / Anthropologie: Disappointed by the quality of the cheaper BHLDN dresses; overall she lost money on return shipping across several online orders.
- Amazon: Owns the black Amazon version and says it is far too casual for a church wedding.
- Poshmark: No returns, so only buy if you already know your exact size in that specific dress.
- Facebook Marketplace: Bought unseen because it was so cheap, planning to flip it if it failed. It did not fit and has sat with no enquiries at all, not even a message.
- JJ's House: Cautions that the dresses ship from China, sizing is not accurate and returns are difficult
The recurring failure modes across every channel: a listing photo lifted from the designer's own catalogue, an "original price" invented to make the discount look bigger, a custom order that arrives four weeks before the wedding with no time to fix it, and a final-sale gown that cannot go back. Brides who paid through a platform with buyer protection recovered money; brides who paid a seller directly usually did not.
What brides asked about where to buy
Where can I buy a wedding dress under $500?
1522 of 4,609 brides here paid under $500, and they clustered in five places: non-bridal retail such as Lulus, ASOS and department-store gowns (channel median $280), made-to-measure sites like Azazie and JJ's House, secondhand marketplaces (StillWhite, Poshmark, Facebook Marketplace, eBay, Mercari), thrift and charity bridal shops, and sample or clearance racks at David's Bridal and BHLDN.
Is it safe to buy a wedding dress online?
Brides who ordered made to measure from Azazie, Olivia Bottega, Cocomelody and established Etsy sellers mostly reported good fits and little or no alteration cost. The warnings cluster elsewhere: photos stolen from designers on marketplace listings, sellers who inflate the original price to fake a discount, and gowns that arrive damaged with no return. Order four to six months out, pay through the platform, and check that the seller has photo reviews.
Are sample sales worth it?
They are the biggest single discount in these accounts: floor samples cut 50% to 80%, a $10,000 atelier gown sold for $2,500, a $2,200 dress for $1,100. The trade-offs are the sample size (usually a US 8 to 12), the condition (makeup on the neckline, a stepped-on hem) and the no-return rule. Budget for alterations at the same time.
Where do brides sell wedding dresses?
StillWhite, PreOwnedWeddingDresses, Poshmark, Facebook groups and local consignment shops. Recovery is a fraction of retail: a $7,000 designer gown sold for $2,800, a $2,500 dress for $1,150, and altered gowns are the hardest to sell at any price.
What is the cheapest way to get a wedding dress?
Borrowing or wearing a family gown costs nothing but alterations. After that: thrift and charity bridal shops ($17 to $200 in these accounts), non-bridal retail sales, and made-to-measure overseas orders. The secondhand channel median is $300 against $1,900 at a salon.
Can I rent a wedding dress instead of buying one?
the bride who asked listed renting as an option but nobody here had done it. Every answer steered instead to consignment, samples, resale sites or made-to-measure, which leave you free to alter the dress. One bride found a shop that rents gowns and even alters the rental and was thrilled; another rented her dream dress, found it slightly loose in the bust and now wishes she had bought a tailored dress.
How much can I resell my wedding dress for?
Do not count on much: one bride got 300 back on a 950 dress after 1.5 years on eBay. A shop employee notes many StillWhite listings are priced above what the dress costs new, so realistic resale is a fraction of retail. Expect roughly half of what you paid at best. The brides, a longtime resale seller, thinks a barely-altered current-collection gown from a hot designer will fetch 50 to 60 percent, about $7,000 to $8,000 on a $15,000 dress. Others warn that most secondhand shoppers are working with about $1,000 and that anything above $2,000 is a slow sell.
How much does a custom-made wedding dress cost?
Custom ranged from 400-800 abroad (Eastern Europe, Argentina) and 420 made-to-measure in the US to 2,750-2,800 from US custom makers and 4,000-5,000 at custom bridal boutiques. Overseas custom from Vietnam or China came to under 1,000 for four dresses. Custom ranged from 150 made in China and 1050 made in Vietnam through Etsy ateliers at 850-1900, a Brooklyn designer under 4k, a 5500 custom that avoided any alteration bill, 7500 at Monica's Bridal and 7800 for a self-designed art-piece gown.
where can I buy a wedding dress under $500
The routes that actually produced dresses here: ASOS at $150-250, David's Bridal clearance at $169-300, Anthropologie and BHLDN sales at $345, Lulus at $100, Revolve at $70 on Black Friday, Vow'd at $300, secondhand on Poshmark and Mercari at $120-300, consignment and resale shops at $200-450, and salon sample sales at $450. The routes brides actually used at that price were online labels (Azazie $150-450, Lulus $72-98, Baltic Born under $100, Selkie $175, Dessy $270), Etsy or AliExpress made-to-measure ($300-620), resale sites (StillWhite, Poshmark, eBay, Facebook Marketplace, $30-450) and donated-dress charity shops ($100-300). Bridal salons at full price were the one route almost nobody managed under $500.
Should I go wedding dress shopping alone?
The bride asked this mid-discussion and the answers favoured it. One bride did every appointment alone except two and prefers it that way; going alone was suggested specifically for the confirmation visit when you already have a frontrunner. Every bride who rebought went alone the second time and calls it the better decision. Bringing bridesmaids adds scheduling guilt and outside opinions, which is what pushed this bride into a gown she is unsure about.
How much do people actually spend on a wedding dress?
Across roughly 170 answers the biggest cluster is 1,200-2,500, a large second group paid under 600 (off the rack, samples, secondhand, non-bridal), and only a handful went 4,000-10,000; The Knot's average is about 1,900, which means many brides spend well below it. In this 26-answer poll the spread ran from a free vintage gown and a 100 dollar consignment find up to 4400 AUD for a custom couture ball gown, with the bulk of answers clustered between 700 and 1500 USD all in.
Where can I find a cheap wedding dress?
Sample sales delivered 150-1,300 gowns that retailed 800-3,000; StillWhite and eBay turned up 450-800 dresses (one 2,000 design for 495); Brides For A Cause sells every gown for 150 at its dress dash; David's Bridal off the rack ran 200-400; and Azazie, Lulus, SHEIN, Amazon and Ross dresses cost 20-100. Named routes with real purchases behind them: a chain bridal store at 50% off ($866 with veil and tax), a charity resale nonprofit ($300 for a new display gown), secondhand resale sites, bridal consignment shops, sample sales, and returnable try-at-home online brands.
where can I buy a secondhand wedding dress online
Poshmark, Mercari, StillWhite, Tradesy, preownedweddingdresses.com, Nearly Newlywed, Facebook Marketplace and Brides for a Cause on the West Coast. Reported prices were $120-375 for gowns retailing at ten times that. StillWhite also lets you search by location and message the seller to try the dress on in person. Named routes with real purchases behind them: StillWhite, Poshmark, Etsy vintage sellers, Facebook Marketplace, Goodwill's online store and dedicated resale boutiques. Prices reported ran from $100 to $550, against retails of $2,000 to £12,000.
Where can I buy a secondhand wedding dress?
StillWhite dominated this discussion, with real purchases at $250 on a $750 listing, $500 on a gown with MSRP over $3,000, and one at 40% of ticket price. Others bought new-with-tags on Mercari, a lookalike gown on eBay for $180 shipped, one on eBay for 100 pounds, and a never-worn gown for $1,200 at a consignment shop. Poshmark came up most, with gowns bought at 150, about 220 and 630. Others used StillWhite at 750, eBay for a Vera Wang at a tenth of retail and a 40 pound gown, Facebook Marketplace, and bricks-and-mortar bridal consignment where blowout sales run 400 to 800.
Can I resell my wedding dress to get some money back?
Do not count on it: resale brings a small fraction of retail, a stain or rip kills the value, and the bride who asked would price her 1,600 gown at 500 max; the flip side is that one bride bought an 1,800 gown on eBay for about 400. One bride's research puts the typical recovery at roughly half of what you paid, which she offers as a way to justify a dress at the top of your range.
Where can I buy a designer wedding dress secondhand?
Named and used by brides: StillWhite, PreOwnedWeddingDresses, Poshmark and eBay. Reported outcomes include a pristine StillWhite gown, a new one $1,000 under salon price with international shipping, and a $10,000-12,000 discontinued gown bought for $1,000. Named routes from people using them: Poshmark and The RealReal for tracking a specific designer style until it appears, and StillWhite for resale bridal, including Danielle Frankel veils. eBay and Etsy came up for worn-once gowns.
how much money do you get back reselling a wedding dress
Estimates here run 70-80% of what you paid if the gown is unworn and unaltered, dropping to 30-50% once it has been taken home. One bride suggests listing it while it is still at the shop, with that story attached, to hold the higher figure. Plan on a quarter to half. New with tags and unaltered is the only stock that holds value, and even then brides said 50-75% of retail is the ceiling. Concrete cases: a friend was offered $600 on a $3,000 gown, an $1,800 photo dress with tags on did not sell at $500, and two dresses that cost over $1,000 new resold for $25 and not at all.
