Sales tax by state · checked 9 September 2026
Sales Tax on a Wedding Dress, State by State
On a gown at the salon median of $1,900, sales tax is a real line rather than a rounding error, and it is one of the few costs decided entirely by geography.
The rule that surprises people: several states that exempt clothing tax formal wear anyway. Pennsylvania is the clearest case, and its own retailer guide names bridal dresses as taxable.
What each state does
Only the states that treat clothing differently from other goods are listed. Everywhere else, a wedding dress is taxed at the ordinary state and local rate.
| State | How it treats clothing | What that means for a wedding gown |
|---|---|---|
| Delaware | No sales tax at all | Nothing to pay. |
| Montana | No sales tax at all | Nothing to pay. |
| New Hampshire | No sales tax at all | Nothing to pay. |
| Oregon | No sales tax at all | Nothing to pay. |
| Minnesota | Clothing exempt, no price cap | Exempt. Bridal apparel and formal wear are named as exempt. |
| New Jersey | Clothing exempt, no price cap | Exempt. Fur, accessories and sports gear are the carve-outs. |
| Vermont | Clothing exempt | Exempt. Accessories are taxable. |
| Pennsylvania | Clothing exempt, but formal wear is not | Taxable. The state's own retailer guide lists formal day or evening apparel as taxable and names bridal dresses. |
| Rhode Island | First $250 per item exempt, overage taxed | First $250 exempt, the rest taxed. Formal and wedding apparel are inside the exemption. |
| Massachusetts | First $175 per item exempt, overage taxed at 6.25% | First $175 exempt, the rest taxed. The rule covers formal wear. |
| New York | Under $110 per item exempt from the 4% state tax, at $110 the whole price is taxed | Taxable in full, since a gown is over the threshold. Most local jurisdictions tax it too. |
| Connecticut | General rate applies, with a 7.75% luxury rate above $1,000 | Taxable, and a gown over $1,000 falls into the higher luxury rate. |
| Alaska | No statewide sales tax, local rates vary | Depends on the borough or city. |
The formal-wear carve-out
This is the part that catches brides out. A state can exempt clothing in general and still tax a wedding dress, because the exemption is written for everyday wearing apparel and formal wear is listed as an exception alongside fur and sports equipment.
Pennsylvania's retailer guide is explicit: clothing is not taxable except for formal day or evening apparel, and the taxable list names bridal dresses among tuxedos, dinner jackets and formal ties. Minnesota goes the other way and names bridal apparel and formal wear inside the exemption, and Rhode Island's first $250 applies to wedding apparel specifically. Two neighbouring states can therefore give opposite answers on the same gown.
Why a threshold rarely helps a wedding dress
Three states exempt clothing up to a price, and the mechanics differ in a way that matters at wedding-dress prices. Massachusetts and Rhode Island tax only the amount above the threshold, so on a $2,000 gown Massachusetts taxes $1,825 and Rhode Island taxes $1,750. New York works the other way: under $110 is exempt, and at $110 the entire price becomes taxable, so a gown gets no relief at all.
What brides did about it
- Out-of-state shipping of a sample waives sales tax; a discontinued sample can still cost $650.
- Some shops bundle alterations: one bride's shop altered her dress free with purchase, and another bought in a state with no sales tax on dresses at a shop offering free basic alterations with stipulations.
- Sales tax on a five-figure gown is large enough to plan around. One bride had hers shipped to friends in a state without sales tax and kept about $1,000 that would otherwise have gone to the state.
- New Jersey charges no sales tax on the dress, which one bride counted as a real saving on a 1295 gown.
- In Australia a 1,200 AUD sample was considered cheap and secondhand dresses were too short for a tall bride; in Ontario the 13% sales tax pushed a dress-plus-alterations bill to 3,260 CAD.
Questions about sales tax on a gown
Is there sales tax on a wedding dress?
In most of the United States, yes, at the ordinary rate. The exceptions are the four states with no sales tax at all, and the states that exempt clothing. The trap is that several clothing-exempt states carve formal wear back out, so a wedding gown is taxed where a pair of jeans is not.
Which states have no sales tax on a wedding dress?
Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon have no sales tax on anything. Minnesota, New Jersey and Vermont exempt clothing, and Minnesota names bridal apparel and formal wear inside that exemption. Rhode Island exempts the first $250 of a garment including wedding apparel, and Massachusetts the first $175.
Is a wedding dress taxable in Pennsylvania?
Yes, and it is the most common misunderstanding on this subject. Pennsylvania exempts everyday clothing, but its retailer guide lists formal day or evening apparel as taxable and names bridal dresses among the taxable items. Buying a gown in Philadelphia carries the local rate on top.
Can I avoid sales tax by shipping the dress to another state?
Where the gown is delivered is what usually decides the tax, and one bride in this dataset had hers shipped to friends in a state without sales tax and kept about $1,000 that would otherwise have gone in tax on a five-figure gown. That is a real mechanism, and it is also where use tax exists: many states expect the buyer to declare and pay tax on goods brought in untaxed. Read your own state's rule before planning around it.
Does sales tax apply to alterations?
Sometimes, and separately from the dress. Services are taxed differently from goods in every state, so a shop that charges no tax on the gown may still tax the tailoring, or the other way round. Ask for the quote with tax shown rather than assuming.
Is it normal to regret your wedding dress right after buying it?
Several brides report the same thing unprompted: one felt it within a couple of days of ordering and went back to the boutique, one still regrets her choice five years later, and regulars say regret posts appear multiple times a day in this sub. It is very common here: several said they panicked after ordering and then fell back in love with the gown, while two rebought, including one who replaced a $2,700 dress with a $400 one.
how much does a custom wedding dress from etsy cost
One bride had hers made to measurement in New Zealand and shipped to the UK, with her own design change of blue in the underskirts, for under 400 GBP delivered. That was about eight and a half years before the discussion. Etsy custom gowns came in at $200-$800 here, with $800 buying a basque waist plus train and bustle made to measure. Buyers stress vetting: account age, sales count, reviews with real photos, and reverse image searching the listing photos.
Can I rent a wedding dress in Toronto?
Fitzroy Rentals in Toronto rents gowns, and one bride said the company also sells its retired rental dresses for under 150, mostly white or off-white styles without trains. Yes. Fitzroy in the GTA rents gowns and one bride is renting hers for 150.
Should I try on wedding dresses above my budget?
Repeatedly called the cardinal rule of dress shopping: do not. The brides only put this one on to look at the back and ended up in tears in the mirror, which some brides read as the shop steering her toward a bigger sale. No. Brides repeatedly warn that stylists pull above-budget gowns and you fall for them; state a hard limit up front. One bride who gave a 1,200 budget was shown only gowns under it and paid 950.
does wedding dress regret go away
For the brides answering here it did. One had major regret a week out and now loves her photos; another wound up with something quite different from her vision and reports zero regret. the bride who asked later confirmed she was happy at pickup. For this bride it did completely. She wrote in a panic months before the wedding, wore the same dress, and came back afterwards saying she felt like a princess in it and was glad she had been talked off the ledge.
can you negotiate the price of a wedding dress at a bridal shop
brides say to ask the shop to meet you halfway or to sell it at your stated budget, and to ring other shops that carry the same gown to compare. The worst outcome is a no. Some brides did: one always asks for 10% off by citing another shop, one haggled a consignment gown to 500, and a shop honored a written misquote so a 10,000-plus gown sold for 6,000; a discontinued floor sample went for 50% off.
