Courthouse and Elopement Dress Cost
A dress for a courthouse ceremony, an elopement or a second wedding is a different purchase with a different budget, and the routes that serve it barely overlap with bridal salons.
What brides spent
- The same inexpensive dress turns up repeatedly: a third bride was wearing this exact gown for her elopement three weeks after the discussion.
- David's Bridal's size-inclusive elopement line sells off the rack around 350 and needs only hem and bustle; a sister's David's Bridal gown was about 500 and a sale dress 200.
- A wedding photographer commenting backed the dress the bride who asked bought as the right one for a mountain elopement.
- A 300 David's Bridal gown bought for a planned courthouse ceremony was judged not good enough once the wedding scaled up, so the buyer is shopping again. Budget-tier quality holding up depends on the size of the event it is being worn to.
- The trade-off brides name for a cheap elopement outfit is that the money saved on the clothes goes into the day itself, including hiring or arranging someone to photograph it.
- Non-bridal white gowns work for less traditional weddings: Abercrombie 190 for a courthouse wedding, an Anthropologie sample-sale gown 500, and a 729 non-bridal gown at 650 with a promo code.
Second weddings and vow renewals
- the asking bride's earlier justice-of-the-peace wedding cost under 200 including the dress, versus the 12,000 average wedding cost she cites; her second wedding target was 1,000-1,200 all-in, with 500 of that on the reception hall.
- Cleaning can outrun the dress: a bride whose Lulus gown cost about 300 for a Mexican vow renewal paid more for dry cleaning than for the dress after the hem was soiled at the reception.
What brides paid
Every row is one bride, cheapest first.
| Gown | Year | The account |
|---|---|---|
| $0 | 2025 | Wore her sisters gown for a courthouse wedding; she also reports someone paying 1100 for a 3500 off-the-rack gown then overspending on the fitting |
| $50 | 2025 | Bought from a seller offloading theatre production costumes; alterations ran a couple of hundred; she eloped in a castle in Europe. |
| $75 | 2026 | Vintage elopement dress she calls perfect and high quality. |
| $89 | 2024 | Lulus elopement dress; 49 party dress; 100 covered hemming one and adding cups to the other. |
| C$173 | 2026 | Risked a SHEIN dress for a 2027 second wedding and calls it gorgeous. |
| $200 | 2025 | First-marriage gown; for her second wedding she is choosing another low-key white dress she can move in |
| $200 | 2021 | Beach elopement dress; 200 is the ceiling she gave, not an exact price. She still needs a little length taken off and is not wearing heels. |
| $250 | 2022 | DB clearance gown 250 with 275-300 alterations (five-layer hem); a second DB elopement dress was 200 plus 200 alterations |
| $300 | 2026 | Beaded feather-hem gown for a destination vow renewal; water drums at the reception filthied the hem and the dry cleaning bill beat the dress price |
| $500 | 2023 | Reception dress: Stella York 6776 for 500 on StillWhite, 1500 alterations caught her off guard, hoping to resell; city hall dress 88 Lulus plus 190 alterations |
| $1,200 | 2023 | Age 50, second wedding, wanted under 1k; 5 salons and department stores found nothing; ended with a non-white dress; disappointed by the price |
| $1,600 | 2026 | Net-a-Porter dress for a city hall wedding |
Questions
What should I wear to a courthouse wedding?
Whatever you would be happy photographed in, which in these accounts is usually not a bridal gown. Brides describe non-bridal white dresses, evening and reception styles, bridesmaid lines in ivory and, often, something they already owned. The constraint that shapes the choice is that a register office ceremony is short and often followed by a meal rather than a party.
How much does an elopement dress cost?
Far less than a wedding gown, and the gap is the whole point. The routes brides use here are ready-to-wear, resale and non-bridal retail, none of which carry bridal pricing. Several accounts pair a cheap dress with good photographs and describe the trade as obviously worth it.
Should a second-time bride wear white?
The brides here who asked got the same answer, which is that it is nobody else's decision. What changes more often than the colour is the format: shorter dresses, separates, and a preference for something wearable again.
Is it normal to regret your wedding dress right after buying it?
Several brides report the same thing unprompted: one felt it within a couple of days of ordering and went back to the boutique, one still regrets her choice five years later, and regulars say regret posts appear multiple times a day in this sub. It is very common here: several said they panicked after ordering and then fell back in love with the gown, while two rebought, including one who replaced a $2,700 dress with a $400 one.
How much does a custom-made wedding dress cost?
Custom ranged from 400-800 abroad (Eastern Europe, Argentina) and 420 made-to-measure in the US to 2,750-2,800 from US custom makers and 4,000-5,000 at custom bridal boutiques. Overseas custom from Vietnam or China came to under 1,000 for four dresses. Custom ranged from 150 made in China and 1050 made in Vietnam through Etsy ateliers at 850-1900, a Brooklyn designer under 4k, a 5500 custom that avoided any alteration bill, 7500 at Monica's Bridal and 7800 for a self-designed art-piece gown.
Should I go wedding dress shopping alone?
The bride asked this mid-discussion and the answers favoured it. One bride did every appointment alone except two and prefers it that way; going alone was suggested specifically for the confirmation visit when you already have a frontrunner. Every bride who rebought went alone the second time and calls it the better decision. Bringing bridesmaids adds scheduling guilt and outside opinions, which is what pushed this bride into a gown she is unsure about.
Should I try on wedding dresses above my budget?
Repeatedly called the cardinal rule of dress shopping: do not. The brides only put this one on to look at the back and ended up in tears in the mirror, which some brides read as the shop steering her toward a bigger sale. No. Brides repeatedly warn that stylists pull above-budget gowns and you fall for them; state a hard limit up front. One bride who gave a 1,200 budget was shown only gowns under it and paid 950.
does wedding dress regret go away
For the brides answering here it did. One had major regret a week out and now loves her photos; another wound up with something quite different from her vision and reports zero regret. the bride who asked later confirmed she was happy at pickup. For this bride it did completely. She wrote in a panic months before the wedding, wore the same dress, and came back afterwards saying she felt like a princess in it and was glad she had been talked off the ledge.
can you negotiate the price of a wedding dress at a bridal shop
brides say to ask the shop to meet you halfway or to sell it at your stated budget, and to ring other shops that carry the same gown to compare. The worst outcome is a no. Some brides did: one always asks for 10% off by citing another shop, one haggled a consignment gown to 500, and a shop honored a written misquote so a 10,000-plus gown sold for 6,000; a discontinued floor sample went for 50% off.
