Settling for a Cheaper Dress and Wishing She Had Not
The other side of a budget: brides who kept the money and lost the gown they wanted. 89 brides here describe it, at a median $750 where they said what they paid. Another 6 name the same thing and still say they have no regret.
What brides describe
Every account filed under this reason, dearest first, with what she paid, when she wrote and what she did about it.
| Paid | When | What she did | The account |
|---|---|---|---|
| $3,700 | Before the wedding | Bought a second dress | Bought a 1500 gown inside her 2000 budget, came to hate it and is still trying to resell it, then bought the dress she actually wanted at 3700 plus 600 alterations after a pay rise. |
| $3,000 | Before the wedding | Still deciding | Took her second choice because the first would not alter well, loves it, but then found the dream gown used on eBay at 300 and is weighing buying it just for the ceremony. |
| $2,000 | Before the wedding | Kept it and wore it | Wanted to stay under 1k, will spend close to 2k, and still sort of regrets not buying the 5k dress she fell for. |
| $2,000 | After the wedding | Kept it and wore it | Has no regrets about paying 2000, but wishes she had spent a little more on the black gown she actually wanted. |
| $2,000 | After the wedding | Bought a second dress | Bought a discounted gown she thought good enough, then found the one she loved at 2000 on a later trip with her mother; the first shop refused to cancel, so she owned two and felt sick about the cost. |
| $1,500 | After the wedding | Not stated | Walked away from a $1,500 gown she calls her dream dress and still thinks about it |
| $1,000 | After the wedding | Bought a second dress | Regrets an earlier 450 BHLDN sale gown bought because it was pretty good and too sexy for her vibe; her mother then paid 1000 for a made-to-order gown reduced from 1200, with 600 more in alterations. |
| $850 | Before the wedding | Kept it and wore it | Describes the $850 secondhand gown as adequate rather than loved, and expects another $600-800 of alterations on top. |
| $800 | Not stated | Bought a second dress | Budgeted $1,000, bought an $800 sale gown she was not fully happy in, then paid $2,200 for one she loves |
| $800 | Before the wedding | Still deciding | Fell for the first gown she tried, then bought a cheaper one-of-a-kind that fit off the rack. Feels sick that price, not love, decided it, and her mother paid so she cannot say so out loud. |
| $700 | Before the wedding | Had it altered or remade | Loved an over-budget Essence gown, so bought a similar Stella York on resale for 700 plus a home-made overskirt. The Essence later showed up on resale at 900; she kept the Stella and sews part of it. |
| $650 | Before the wedding | Kept it and wore it | Buying off the rack narrowed her options badly for a beach venue and she was not fully convinced, though it was her favourite of everything she tried. A waist seam bothered her; she decided nobody would notice |
| $650 | Before the wedding | Kept it and wore it | Her grandmothers were paying, so she picked a dress that fit the budget and ticked most boxes. She does not love it, has made peace with it, and is buying a reception dress. |
| $500 | Before the wedding | Still deciding | Bought on her first day of shopping largely because the gown was only 500 dollars, and now feels she should have chosen something else. |
| C$340 | After the wedding | Kept it and wore it | Came in under 1000 all in at 340 for the gown, 250 to rebuild the bust for a 38J and 105 dry cleaning; happy with the total but sorry the budget steered her to a dress she only 80 percent loved. |
| $200 | Before the wedding | Kept it and wore it | Shopped several stores, ended at David's Bridal for a tea-length gown, never fell in love with it but expects to look nice and be comfortable. |
| $200 | After the wedding | Kept it and wore it | Secondhand Facebook Marketplace gown plus $400 alterations, the only dress she ever tried on. Not the greatest dress ever, but staying on budget mattered more. |
| $180 | Before the wedding | Kept it and wore it | Not the dress she imagined herself in and she dislikes buying from SHEIN, but it was the only one she loved at that price in a HCOL area; she is adding 3D flowers herself. |
| $100 | After the wedding | Kept it and wore it | The Lucinda had been her second choice; she loves the 100 dress she bought instead but admits to being a little jealous of the bride who got the other one. |
| $90 | Before the wedding | Bought a second dress | Thrifted a 90 ballgown to refurbish, grew to hate it, and took a second job to fund the boutique gown she actually wants |
| C$50 | Not stated | Not stated | Bought a brand new expo dress for 50 in 2024 and says she cheaped out and kind of regrets it. |
| $40 | Not stated | Kept it and wore it | Loved her 40 online charity-shop dress until she was talked into trying gowns for fun; now she compares it to a 1200 dress she preferred and feels heartbroken |
| – | Before the wedding | Still deciding | Letting go of the lace gown she wanted felt like a small heartbreak; the wildcard she found instead fits, is half price and makes her feel bridal, but reads more formal than her wedding. |
| – | After the wedding | Kept it and wore it | Picked a short simple lace dress because ball gowns felt too heavy and she feared tripping on a long skirt. Now wishes she had worn the long dress and gone barefoot for the ceremony as she originally wanted. |

| – | After the wedding | Kept it and wore it | Same pattern of a lacy strapless regret dress and a second gown she preferred; she stuck with the first and still feels bummed looking back at her wedding pictures. |

| – | After the wedding | Kept it and wore it | Bought at David's Bridal only because she needed a dress immediately, and later saw a nicer one at a bridal store she would have preferred. |
| – | After the wedding | Kept it and wore it | Tall plus-size bride laughed at on the phone by boutiques; returned to David's Bridal, never found a dream dress and picked one anyway. |
| – | Not stated | Kept it and wore it | Could not mentally pull the trigger on a pricier gown and took the 3-4k option; still calls the 10-12k dresses much nicer, just not worth the multiple to her. |
| – | After the wedding | Kept it and wore it | Wore a random mostly-white dress to her small wedding instead of finding a proper gown, and still lurks in dress subs because of it. |

| – | Not stated | Not stated | Tried on this exact dress and regrets not buying it. |

| – | Before the wedding | Kept it and wore it | Could not afford the gown she wanted so she bought a dupe 1300 below the 1600 original and regrets it, disliking the cheap fabric and corset back; she eloped and will wear it for anniversary photos. |
| – | After the wedding | Kept it and wore it | Chose a plain off-the-rack gown and regrets not spending more on something nicer. |
| – | After the wedding | Kept it and wore it | Stayed inside her budget, which felt right at the time, and three years later still thinks about the out-of-budget gown she loved and should have bought. |
| – | After the wedding | Not stated | Passed on her dream dress ten years ago and still thinks about it |

| – | After the wedding | Kept it and wore it | Her mother offered to pay, the dream gown was above what she could offer, and admitting it would have caused offence, so she pretended a different dress was the one; five years married, she still mourns the fir |
| – | After the wedding | Kept it and wore it | Settled on a gown she calls good enough and does love, but four months on, photos and social posts still send her mind back to the Australian designer she never travelled to try. |
| – | Before the wedding | Still deciding | Said yes in July after only six try-ons and chose the plain classic gown over her dark-horse lace pick; four months on it feels boring and she wrote the photos for an unbiased vote. |
| – | Not stated | Not stated | Tried a $2,000 gown she had no business trying on, then spent a month hunting dupes on Azazie and scouring StillWhite, eBay and Poshmark. Her comment cuts off before the outcome. |
| – | Before the wedding | Still deciding | Facing the same dilemma; has found a well-priced StillWhite listing for a gown she tried and thought was fine but does not love, and is leaning toward taking it anyway. |
| – | Not stated | Kept it and wore it | Took the cheaper gown herself to save money and now tells other brides to splurge on the dream dress instead. |

| – | After the wedding | Kept it and wore it | Passed on an over-budget gown she loved and bought a Calla Blanche at the low end of budget; it did not feel cheap but she thinks she should have bought the first one, since the totals would have matched after |
| – | Not stated | Kept it and wore it | Loved a first gown 1,200 over budget, bought a second one 750 under instead; part of her still wishes she had the first, but the saved 2,000 became a trip to Rome. |
| – | Before the wedding | Bought a second dress | Bride's view on bridesmaid dresses. Wanted the same $260 dress, could not fund it and put her maids in Azazie instead; says she is still sad about the swap. |
| – | After the wedding | Kept it and wore it | Did not buy the gown she loved, bought another, and still thinks about the first one |

The same reason, without the regret
6 brides name this same thing and still say they have no regret about the dress. Read against the table above, this is the useful half: the same situation that ended differently.
| Paid | When | What she did | The account |
|---|---|---|---|
| $2,500 | Not stated | Bought a second dress | Bought a 2500 Essense of Australia gown first and regretted it so badly it cost her sleep, then took the loss and bought the couture Galia Lahav she actually wanted. |

| – | After the wedding | Bought a second dress | Regretted a first gown that was lovely but too simple, switched to a bold blue dress with matching veil and has already worn it again |
| – | Not stated | Bought a second dress | Was strict on budget, settled for a dress that met it, then changed her mind and bought the out-of-budget one. She is 100x happier with the second. |
| – | After the wedding | Kept it and wore it | Bought a year out, cried after all three fittings, searched online and even asked to borrow friends' dresses, then loved hers on the day. |
| – | Before the wedding | Kept it and wore it | Bought a gown instead of a dream dress that was four times her budget, wanted sleeves and ended up with lace straps, and says she loves her choice more after the discussion |

What they tell the next bride
- Chase the dream gown through sample sales and resale first, but accept when the alterations bill makes the bargain pointless.
- Wear what you actually pictured. The safer simpler dress is the one you second guess later.
- Find a photo of the runner-up; the memory is almost always better than the dress. In a year you will not care.
- Go with your heart if it will not cause real hardship; the alternative is being reminded every time you look at the photos.
- Do not buy a gown because it is pretty good and on sale; the discount will not stop it feeling wrong.
- If a gift dress is the one you love, stop relitigating it.
- Confirm the actual in-store price before travelling for a specific gown.
- Do not buy a dress you feel lukewarm about; how you feel in it affects the whole day.
- If your timeline forces an off-the-rack buy, accept it will not be the gown you would have chosen with more notice.
- If one branch treats you badly, another may not; a different consultant changed the whole experience.
- Compare the same silhouette at four price levels before deciding what the extra money buys you.
- If you want a real wedding dress, buy one; a plain white dress is the thing she regrets.
- The only thing worth regretting is buying a dress you do not love
- Buy the over-budget dress you love.
- You will not forget the dress you passed on, so buy it
- Buy the dress even on a small budget
- Follow your gut instead of the practical choice
- A cheap sale dress you are only partly happy with costs more in the end
- Do not try on a dress you cannot buy, and never let someone else talk you into the appointment expecting them to close the gap.
- Buy the gown you love rather than the practical one; the photographs are what you live with.
- A cheap copy shows: check the fabric and the corset back before you buy the lookalike instead of the original.
- Buy the dress of your dreams; going plain and off the rack is what she wishes she had not done.
- Do not pass on the dress you actually want
- Go back and look at the actual dress on the hanger when the doubt creeps in.
Questions
How common is this?
89 of the 917 brides here who describe regret or mixed feelings name this as the reason. Another 6 name the same thing and say they have no regret about the dress anyway, which is the more useful comparison.
When does it come up?
31 of these accounts were written before the wedding and 40 afterwards. Before and after are different problems: doubt before the day is usually comparison, and what survives the day is money and compromise. The split is set out on the regret page.
What did brides do about it?
Most kept the dress. 59 kept it and wore it, 12 bought a second dress, 9 still deciding, 6 not stated.
Is it normal to regret your wedding dress right after buying it?
Several brides report the same thing unprompted: one felt it within a couple of days of ordering and went back to the boutique, one still regrets her choice five years later, and regulars say regret posts appear multiple times a day in this sub. It is very common here: several said they panicked after ordering and then fell back in love with the gown, while two rebought, including one who replaced a $2,700 dress with a $400 one.
how do i stop second-guessing my wedding dress
Stop browsing other gowns online, and go back to the shop to try yours on again. Repeat browsing is named as the thing feeding the doubt. Stop looking at inspiration. The brides traced her doubt to California elopement content that skews very casual, and brides told her to get off social media and ask instead whether the dress makes her feel beautiful.
Should I try on wedding dresses above my budget?
Repeatedly called the cardinal rule of dress shopping: do not. The brides only put this one on to look at the back and ended up in tears in the mirror, which some brides read as the shop steering her toward a bigger sale. No. Brides repeatedly warn that stylists pull above-budget gowns and you fall for them; state a hard limit up front. One bride who gave a 1,200 budget was shown only gowns under it and paid 950.
does wedding dress regret go away
For the brides answering here it did. One had major regret a week out and now loves her photos; another wound up with something quite different from her vision and reports zero regret. the bride who asked later confirmed she was happy at pickup. For this bride it did completely. She wrote in a panic months before the wedding, wore the same dress, and came back afterwards saying she felt like a princess in it and was glad she had been talked off the ledge.
can you negotiate the price of a wedding dress at a bridal shop
brides say to ask the shop to meet you halfway or to sell it at your stated budget, and to ring other shops that carry the same gown to compare. The worst outcome is a no. Some brides did: one always asks for 10% off by citing another shop, one haggled a consignment gown to 500, and a shop honored a written misquote so a 10,000-plus gown sold for 6,000; a discontinued floor sample went for 50% off.
should I buy a second wedding dress if I regret the first
Everyone here who did says it was worth it, and the one bride who stuck with her regret dress still feels bummed looking at her photos. The caveat brides add is to pay for it outside the wedding fund rather than eating into other vendors. This bride did: she bought a $300 replacement, compared the two side by side and went with the new one for her barn wedding.
