What brides recommend it for

• Paid 500 for a gown that retailed around 1500 and it arrived in perfect condition and the right size. You can filter by size, price or designer, make an offer, and some sellers offer try before you buy; PayPal covers you if the dress is not as described.
• Found the exact gown listed on the Australian StillWhite site in a closer size and points out the wedding is in New Zealand; says the style resurfaces there regularly, so track it for a month or two.
• Bought a Lillian West 66110 already dip-dyed by the boutique selling it, 180 including shipping from Austria; the deep cut was because the shop is closing, and a second dyed gown was still listed.
• Both shops and private sellers list there; she paid 300 with shipping for an unaltered boutique sample listed at 1600 retail, needing only the back buttons redone, after talking the seller down 45

What brides warn about

• Listings are current-season only, so her own gown was refused for resale a year after her wedding. She rang the shop, confirmed they stocked the dress, and tried the same size on before buying online.
• Searched resale for her exact gown and found one listing, two sizes too small and heavily altered - a deep front slit cut into a skirt that had none, and a zipper in place of the corset back.
• Two listings of the gown she wants: one altered, dry-cleaned, retrained and bustled to someone else's taste at only about 200 off, which loses her the shop's free alterations.
• Contacted the seller and every measurement matched except the length, which was too short; a boutique sample of the same gown stopped being cheap once alterations were added.
• Used the resale listings plus the designer's Instagram hashtag to find real-bride photos of an obscure gown; turned up almost nothing beyond the official campaign shots.
• Shopped it in 2020 when many listings were only hemmed; a real risk, but the only way she could afford the gown she wanted, and current styles are easy to try in shops.
• Popular styles from in-demand designers get snapped up fast; what sits unsold is overpriced listings, unfashionable designs and very small sizes already hemmed short.
