eBay: What Brides Paid
33 prices reported at eBay run a median $127, from $17 to $900. That sits below the $850 median across every route in this dataset. Separately, 49 brides described what the shop was like to deal with, and 88% of them recommend it.
What brides paid
Every row is one bride: what she paid for the gown, what the tailoring came to when she reported it, and the year.
| Gown | Tailoring | Year | The account |
|---|---|---|---|
| $17 | $200 | 2023 | Vintage eBay dress 17 plus 200 alterations; reception dress 40 on Etsy plus 350 alterations; 607 covers both |
| $30 | – | 2024 | Shipping included; lace gown suited a beach ceremony |
| $46 | – | 2025 | Ceremony dress off eBay; she had already eloped in a black prom dress she loved |
| $60 | – | 2025 | A bridal store was closing and liquidating stock on eBay; she offered far below asking on an Italian silk gown and the seller accepted |
| $70 | – | 2026 | 70 eBay dress she loves, to wear either at the wedding or rehearsal; wants something rewearable |
| $75 | – | 2026 | Wedding dress from eBay for 75; nobody could tell. Also swapped a 4000 ring for a 175 pawn-shop one. |
| $80 | $100 | 2022 | eBay gown 80 plus 100 alterations, worn at the ceremony and a later reception; considers salon markup a rip-off |
| $108 | – | 2026 | Won an eBay auction for an unused 1500 Oleg Cassini at 108; perfect condition and fit |
| $127 | – | 2024 | 80 Amazon dress plus a 40 satin skirt from eBay; doing alterations herself. |
| $150 | – | 2026 | Same gown was an $850 sample in the shop, about half retail; bought it online instead, doubted it twice, loved it again at each try-on |
| $180 | – | 2024 | Price covered tax and shipping |
| $250 | $500 | 2023 | Pre-worn eBay dress; alterations double the dress |
What brides recommend it for
- 20 AUD plus 180 postage; she sent a photo, measurements and colours and it arrived vacuum-packed in a month looking like the picture. Her sister's first eBay dress was made badly and she reordered from another seller
- Brand new designer gown under $1,000 from a bride who changed her wedding style; arrived in a battered cardboard box but perfect, and she verified the purchase with the original bridal shop first
- Wore a designer gown from a boutique seller that listed at $4,500 new; buy pre-owned or new-with-tags from sellers in your own country and get it fitted locally, in her case at David's Bridal
- Ordered from a phone in a restaurant after a day of trying gowns in shops; 50 for the dress plus 20 to a local seamstress to shorten it, and she never regretted skipping shop prices
- A 499 David's Bridal gown for 150 from a bride who got pregnant and never wore it. Her method: a clear idea of the style, a very specific search with alerts, and patience.
- Has bought several wedding dresses this cheaply. Says they are heavy and well made, not the disasters people warn about, though not comparable to a five-figure gown.
- J.Crew Sophia in chiffon, new with tags, 99 plus about 30 of hemming and strap shortening. Silk-lined, light and comfortable; the style appeared often in many sizes.
- Found the same gown she had tried as an $850 shop sample listed for $150 the same day and bought it there; it arrived as expected and she loved it on.
- Her method for cheap vintage bridal jewellery: add the necklaces you like to a wishlist and wait a day or two for sellers to send a discount offer.
- Secondhand corset-back gown for a few hundred. The corset gave slack on fit and the previous bride had already paid to have the bustle put in.
What brides warn about
- Never-worn gown for about a twentieth of retail, but a lot of the beading was missing; she rebeaded it herself with roughly 30 of supplies and says the inside is a mess while the outside looks perfect.
- The same gown ships direct from China for a fraction of the Etsy price and eBay is reliable about refunds when an item does not match - but expect the cheap version, not the retouched photo.
- Worth trying for pre-owned, but size up: listings run small and many have already been altered to fit someone else, so you want room for a tailor.
- Unless the listing is a genuine secondhand dress, much eBay bridal is bulk AliExpress stock - some listings reuse the identical photos
- The gown she bought was good quality but the wrong style, and she could not send it back, so the saving evaporated.
- Suggested as a second listing venue with the same low recovery expectation.
How it compares
The median across every route in this dataset is $850, a bridal salon runs $1,900, and secondhand sits lower again. A shop is worth judging against the route it belongs to rather than against the whole market, which is what the where-to-buy page sets out.
